This is the story of Chad Berger and Bryan Much on their 2005 ride of the Michigan Cycle Concervation Clubs 1200 mile Upper Penninsula Dual Sport Safari.
Heres another cool pit stop. Its Raco field, an "abandoned" airfield
from the cold war era. Its 3 - mile long runways in the shape of a triangle.
Heres your dusty travelers on the runway. a good place to test your top speed on your dual sport bike.
Heres Bryan measuring the runways. Being a military vet, It perked his interest..heck, its a cool place for anyone. There was some rumors that the place isn't totally shut down. People claim theres ventilation ducts for underground compounds and that it was a former Nuke missle site. Who knows, but you do get the feeling that your not alone when your there! I've also heard that some of the automakers do some vehicle testing there too.
haulin' booty! Unfortunately not on the right trail. We were getting close to out stop for the night and I think Bryan was just leading me down all these fun roads just for the heck of it! I didn't mind it though, As long as we weren't on sand, I was having fun.
After a nice dinner at a buffet in St Ignace, we checked out a couple campgrounds and chose a nice, quiet, cheap, Forest service campground. We grabbed some beers and set up camp. Here I am finally fixing my thermarest mattress. What a pain! First, I had to find the patch kit on day 2, then I realized that to patch it you needed to boil water in a flat bottom cup to melt the glue and work it into the mattress. That bought up 2 more problems since I didn't have the cup, and no way to boil water. early day 3 we stopped at a sporting goods store and I bought a small breadpan and some sterno cans.
Day 4, St. Ignace.
Here We have Bryan taking a pic of me taking a pic of the Mackinaw bridge. This monster is huge!
Like I said, we bought no cooking gear so we did some fine dining!
This place was packed, but nobody in the drive thru, so we hopped on the bikes, Bryan placed the order and sat by the window and I grabbed all the food from him. Pretty sneaky we are!
heres the old dirty bastard.
VROOM!
We had some fun trails to ride on early the 4th morning.
