This is the story of Chad Berger and Bryan Much on their 2005 ride of the Michigan Cycle Concervation Clubs 1200 mile Upper Penninsula Dual Sport Safari.
After we got back to Copper Harbor we realized we were going to have trouble getting very far today, since it was close to noon and we were basicly back where we started at 9a.m.
The route back down the peninnsula follows the same route we came up yesterday. Those trails weren't bad but there were a bunch of towns and road crossings so that means alot of stop signs. It seems like all your doing is starting and stopping so we decided to hop on the highway and get some miles in. We made a quick pit stop in Hancock at a motorcycle dealer to see if we could find a speedo cable and mirror for Bryans bike and a mirror for my bike. We also stopped at a sporting goods store to get a patch kit for my Thermarest mattress since I managed to rub 6 holes through mine yesterday due to a bad packing job.
Heres Bryan on a deserted strech of road somewhere out in the boonies.
The ride from Twin Lakes to L'Anse and on to republic was the best part of the ride I think. Pretty remote feel to the area.
Even though we weren't making the best time we still wanted to do a few of the side trips that they tell you about in the info that the CCC gives you for the Safari.
Heres a pic of me coming off the top of Mt Arvon ( I think ), the highest point in Michigan. We tried to find the exact spot of the top, but exteme logging in the area made it quite difficult. We actually rode through an area with some loggers working, I'm sure they were wondering what we were doing.
This must be an old railroad grade or old road. Pretty fun stuff but you still have to stop for pics!
We ended up getting a little confused around the town of Republic but we were having a blast and didn't care.
11hrs28min and 280 miles later arrive in at Little Lake campground. A sub sandwich a few beers and a fireworks show by the lake, not too shabby!
unfortunately we were a day early for a big Harley ralley at that campground. Too bad, I really like hearing those stupid Harleys all night long!
Heres our campsite. As you can see, Bryan packed a pretty small one person tent. This worked out good for him since it was dry for out whole trip. If it had been raining his tiny tent would have been a bit of a pain, but ya gotta respect the ultralight ethics!
Day 3 ( Friday )
We headed out of Little Lake and into Gwinn for Breakfast. We had to make a detour from the route to avoid some road construction. We got back on track and and headed up to Munising to get gas and some camping supplies. After Munising is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We stopped by Twelve mile beach then headed up to Hurricane River on some really sandy roads.
You can see the deep sand pretty good in this pic.
Heres me putting along on the sandy roads. I was still a sand newbie and had never ridden sand on a heavily loaded bike before.
Heres where the Hurricane River meets Lake Superior.
The Au Sable lighthouse can be seen out on the tip.
Next stop, the Grand Sable Sand dunes. Bryan said they would be impressive and it certainly was.
